Perioperative (Surgical) Services
When you need surgery, whether as an inpatient or an outpatient, trust Sanford Bemidji Medical Center. Our Perioperative Department (surgery) has five operating rooms serving patients of all ages from north central Minnesota. Our surgical team provides compassionate, specialized care and includes registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), operating room technicians, and surgical services aides. We have surgeons from seven different specialties who do approximately 6,300 procedures per year.
Our Surgical Specialties
Our staff takes care of patients in need of a variety of procedures, including, but not limited to:
- Orthopedics (surgery involving the bones or muscles)
- General (mainly the abdominal (stomach) area, breast, gall bladder, thyroid, etc.)
- OB/GYN (surgery for women and delivering babies)
- Vascular (arteries and veins)
- ENT (ear, nose, and throat)
- Podiatry (feet)
- Urology (urinary tract and genitals of both male and female)
- Ophthalmology (eyes)
Don’t worry if you have an accident and come to our Emergency Department needing surgery in the middle of the night. Sanford Bemidji Medical Center has 24/7 coverage for emergency surgical services. Our staff will be here for you.

Paging Service
If you come to Sanford Bemidji Medical Center with a loved one who is having surgery you won’t need to sit in the waiting room the whole time. Our volunteer can provide you with a paging box that will light up when your loved one is done or if a doctor needs to speak with you. Just carry the pager with you and you are free to roam throughout the hospital. Browse through the Gift Shop, enjoy a snack or meal in the cafeteria, or take advantage of one of our Internet computer kiosks to check your e-mail. When it’s time for you to return to the surgery area, we’ll let you know.
