Dr. Maria Statton Appointed to Board by Governor Mark Dayton
Maria Statton, MD, PhD, recommended by the Minnesota Medical Association (MMA), was appointed to the state of Minnesota’s Board of Medical Practice (BMP) on Oct. 8 by Governor Mark Dayton. Her term will expire Jan. 7, 2013. The MMA has statutory authority to submit endorsement recommendations to the governor for consideration when making physician appointments to the BMP.
Maria Statton, M.D., PhD, who practices family medicine at Sanford Bemidji’s Main Clinic since 1995, will represent Congressional District 8, beginning immediately. Minnesota's 8th congressional district covers the northeastern part of Minnesota and includes neighboring counties, Koochiching, Itasca, Hubbard and Cass. Its eastern border extends to Duluth and up into Cook county.
“I’m honored to be appointed to the Board of Medical Practice and am excited to expand my work involving the public’s health and safety,” said Dr. Maria Statton. “As a member of the Board, I look forward to helping ensure the long-term stability and quality of physicians and health professionals available throughout Minnesota.”
As a member of the BMP, Dr. Statton will uphold the mission of the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice, which is to protect the public's health and safety by assuring that the people who practice medicine or as an allied health professional are competent, ethical practitioners with the necessary knowledge and skills appropriate to their title and role.
Dr. Statton grew up in the Bemidji area and completed her under graduate degree from Bemidji State University. She went to medical school at the University of North Dakota (Grand Forks, ND) and completed her residency in Family Medicine at UND. She is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha, a medical honor society. In addition to her medical degree, Dr. Statton has a PhD from the UND Graduate School, Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, and was a Patricia Roberts Harris Fellow.
“Dr. Statton is widely respected in the medical community here in Bemidji. I frequently, personally consult her on many levels for her advice and insight. I find her to be smart, knowledgeable, organized and insightful. She clearly understands that every story has at least two sides to it,” said Dan DeKrey, Senior Executive Vice President at Sanford Health of Northern Minnesota. “One would be hard pressed to find a better candidate to fill the position on the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice to represent the 8th District.”
Dr. Statton currently serves on the Sanford Health North Board of Governors and completes her service as a member of the Upper Mississippi Mental Health Center Board of Director this month. Previously, she served as a board member for the Family Advocacy Center of Northern Minnesota, as the Chief of Medical Staff for North Country Regional Hospital and as Co-Chair for the Obstetric-Pediatrics Committee at North Country Regional Hospital.
