Billing and Financial Assistance
Sanford Bemidji Medical Center
Sanford Bemidji Medical Center's Business Office has trained professionals dedicated to assisting you with your billing questions. In addition to the information below, a Glossary of Patient Billing Terms may help you to better understand your billing statement. If further assistance is needed, contact the Business Office at (218) 333-5827.
IF YOU HAVE INSURANCE ...
If you provided us insurance information, we will bill your primary insurance company. If you provided a secondary insurance, we will bill any remaining balance to them after the primary insurance company pays. If there is a balance due after insurance has paid, you are responsible to pay in full or make payment arrangements within 30 days.
We do wish to remind you that your bill, regardless of the type of insurance you may have, is your responsibility. We are happy to file with your insurance company on your behalf, but we do expect you to work with your insurance company so your benefits are paid in a timely manner.
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE INSURANCE...
If you have no insurance, you will receive your bill approximately two weeks after treatment. You are expected to pay in full, or make arrangements within 30 days.
For those who qualify, Minnesota has several healthcare programs. To find out more, contact Sanford Bemidji Medical Center's Outreach Services at (218) 333-6373 or your county human or social services office or visit the Minnesota Department of Human Services online.

WHEN CAN YOU EXPECT YOUR FIRST STATEMENT?
At Sanford Bemidji Medical Center, we send all our patients a statement to keep you informed of our progress in collecting your insurance benefits or if there is a patient balance due. If you would prefer an itemized invoice, please contact our Business Office at (218) 333-5827.
If you have Medicare, your first statement will be sent after Medicare and any supplemental insurance companies have processed your claims. If there is no patient responsibility after all Medicare and supplemental insurance company payments have been received, you will not receive a statement.
For Medical Assistance or MinnesotaCare, you will receive a bill after insurance has paid, only if there is a balance due and you are required to make a payment.
For Blue Cross, Medica, Workers’ Compensation, automobile, and all other insurance, your first statement will be sent after your claims have been processed or if your insurance company is requesting information from you.
HOW OFTEN WILL YOU HEAR FROM US?
As long as you have a balance due, you will get a statement from us once a month after your insurance company has processed your claim. This will list any insurance payment(s) we've received and should match your insurance company’s Explanation of Benefits (EOB). If you did not receive an EOB from your insurance company, please contact them directly.
WHAT ELSE YOU MAY EXPECT
You may have been here for an inpatient hospital stay or for an outpatient service such as x-ray, lab work, emergency room visit, rehabilitation therapy, or surgery. Also, you may have arrived by ambulance. It's possible that you were not here at all, but had lab/pathology tests sent to us by your doctor's office. If any of these situations apply, you may receive a separate bill from a radiologist, pathologist, anesthesiologist, ambulance, clinic, or private doctor, in addition to your hospital bill. You may contact the hospital Business Office at (218) 333-5827 if you have questions about your Sanford Bemidji Medical Center or emergency room charges.
All other questions should be directed to the individual businesses providing the bill or statement. The phone numbers below are for other area healthcare providers from whom you may receive bills:
